Dr. R. Kenneth Carty and Dr. Elaine Carty will each receive an honorary doctorate of letters degree in Fredericton on Wednesday, May 25. Proud UNB alumni, they have become distinguished leaders in their respective careers.
A Rhodes Scholar, Kenneth Carty is an internationally renowned specialist on political parties and electoral systems, placing him at the forefront of Canadian public policy discussions. He served on federal Electoral Boundaries Commissions for British Columbia, was Director of Research for the British Columbia Citizen's Assembly on Electoral reform, and, in 2005, was named a distinguished scholar in residence at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies. As one of the country's foremost experts on democratic party politics, Dr. Carty was honoured with the Mildred A. Swartz Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Political Science Association in 2013.
Elaine Carty is one of Canada's pioneers, educator, researchers and advocates for women's health. In 2016, she was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of her commitment to advancing health-care options for women and her instrumental role in establishing professional midwifery care in British Columbia. She is the recipient of an honorary doctorate of science from McMaster University, a Distinguished Alumnae Award from the Yale University School of Nursing, and the Award for Excellence in Nursing from the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia.
Both Kenneth and Elaine have remained devoted to UNB over the years and the university community is proud to have been the foundation for their outstanding career paths.
