ROBERT BURNS WOODWARD
to be Doctor of Science
Dr. Woodward honours us, as we seek to honour him, by his presence here today. And, illustrious scientist that he is, he embodies three salutary if unwitting lessons: to the student, by the rapidity with which even the higher degrees can be attained -- he petitioned to register for both B.Sc. and Ph.D. on the same day; to the University by the warning that one Freshman in many thousand may have no dross to refine away; and to the public, by the reminder that from the Chemistry department of a University has come another puissant benefactor of mankind.
* His influence on the theory and practice of organic chemistry is comparable only to that of Kekulé; and those who disregard it do so at their scientific peril.
