ENCAENIA, MAY, 1956
FRANK MACKENZIE ROSS
to be Doctor of Laws

Scotland bred, toughened and schooled him. God gave him a warm heart, a sound digestion and a head for figures. Canada beckoned -- and Frank MacKenzie Ross did the rest.

Canada he served with military honours in one war and solid distinction in the other. He is the recently appointed Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. But the tale of his many responsible posts must yield on this occasion to his claim on New Brunswick, which is mutual and threefold.

First, after World War I he went to work for the Saint John Drydock. He rapidly rose to the position of general manager and then to the control of the company. Next, he became joint owner of the Commonwealth's largest cattle ranch, the second largest in the world. He repaid New Brunswick by thrusting on an incredulous Province his famed Herefordshire breed, where for mutual pride and profit they flourish. This might well be cited as the earliest local instance of decentralization. And finally, he has made his summer home in St. Andrews.

Your Honour, I am privileged to present to you a fellow representative of Her Majesty; Mr. President, to you a fellow, if transient, Saint Johnian; and ladies and gentleman, to you a fellow New Brunswicker.
