Dr. Milton F. Gregg, VC, former president of the University of New Brunswick, told 615 graduates at the university’s 139th Encaenia Thursday to "go out and work toward the betterment of mankind."

Dr. Gregg was pinch-hitting for Commonwealth Secretary Arnold Smith who was not able to attend because of peace talks which he had initiated between Nigeria and Biafria. Mr. Smith was also to receive an honorary degree.

"Go out and see if you can put a few drops in the bucket toward the alleviation of hardships to the people of resurgent countries," Dr. Gregg told the graduates. "They are going to have a hard time."

He said the students at UNB have associated with exchange scholars from African countries during their years on the campus, "and thus know the problems and the way of life of the people of the new African states."

With this knowledge UNB graduates should strive to assist these countries in their development, Dr. Gregg said.

He referred to the top level talks which delayed Mr. Smith in London. He said the London negotiations of which Arnold Smith was in charge between Nigeria and Biafria were of "extreme importance to the world second only to the talks in Paris designed to end the bloody war in Vietnam."

Dr. Gregg said it was of extreme importance to the world that Arnold Smith remained in London to conduct the talks. "We can be glad Arnold Smith is in charge of the talks going on in London."
