CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1968
ALLAN FREDERICK SMITH
to be Doctor of Civil Law

Law faculties around the world are indebted to the University of Michigan Law School for law teachers and for legal research. Members of our own Law Faculty have been trained there, and Michigan scholarships have opened the doors of legal research to our graduates.

Michigan has been the home of outstanding legal scholars and teachers. Allan Frederick Smith is one of these men. As Dean of the Law School he contributed his inexhaustible energy, his humour, and his ability to the cause of legal education.

Allan Smith moved from the cornfields of Nebraska to the towers of Michigan with an intermediate stop at Stanford. His career at Michigan has been a creative mingling of scholarship, teaching, and administrative efficiency. His scholarly interests have particularly manifested themselves in his significant articles and books in the law of real property. His administrative skill has been rewarded by advancement to the Deanship of his School and the Vice-Presidency of his University. As a teacher, he was always readily available to his students for counselling and guidance, and maintained his interest in their careers after their graduation.

The American universities have been in the forefront -– indeed have been pioneers -- in the advancement of legal education. In Allan Frederick Smith we are honouring an American legal educator of outstanding distinction.
