CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1958
HARTLEY WILLIAM SHAWCROSS
to be Doctor of Civil Law

In this age of specialization, it is refreshing to encounter a man who has proven skills in a wide variety of activities. Lord Shawcross has been outstandingly successful in his practice at the Bar, in government, and in the world of international business.

After completing his university education, he was called to the Bar in 1925 and took silk some fifteen years later; he left practice for a time for war service.

On the election to office of the Attlee government, he became Attorney-General. Lord Shawcross has participated in many notable trials in his public and in his private practice; he was Chief Prosecutor for the United Kingdom at the Nuremberg trials.

During his political career, his Lordship served as principal United Kingdom delegate to the United Nations Assembly. He was also President of the Board of Trade.

Lord Shawcross retired from practice at the Bar and from the House of Commons in 1958. The following year he was granted a Life Peerage.

He has been active in industry as a legal consultant and as a corporate director.

He has demonstrated his deep interest in education by his service as Chancellor of the University of Sussex and as Crown representative on the Court of London University.

Since his retirement from active politics, Lord Shawcross has continued his contribution to public affairs. He has, for example, served as Chairman of the Royal Commission on the Press and of the Medical Research Council. His Lordship is also Chairman of the International Law Section of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law.

The University honours today -- and is honored by -- one who has served his country and his profession in a most distinguished way.
