ENCAENIA, MAY, 1970
THOMAS OTTEN PAINE
to be Doctor of Science

Those who have ceased to wonder at the miracles of the space age may wonder again today. Before us is the men who served as the topmost authority in the direction of the greatest technical achievement of our age -– some say of all ages. A man has walked on the moon and on our platform at the University of New Brunswick stands one of the men whose remarkable insight and vision have made this great triumph possible.

Thomas Paine, a Californian, commenced his career by sounding the seas as a submarine officer in World War II. He has gained fame by exploration of the heavens, by master-minding the epoch-making efforts of the past year to conquer space. For the high post of Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration he qualified by long years of experimentation in high-temperature alloys and liquid metals in support of nuclear reactor programs. By way of General Electric and as leader of a 400-man long-range planning team, he acquired the knowledge and techniques that have enabled him to play his great part in the success of the Apollo missions.

In 1968 President Johnson found him. In March of 1969 President Nixon conferred upon him his awesome authority. Today we are proud to welcome this great engineer–administrator to our fraternity.
