CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1970
RONALD JAMES BAKER
to be Doctor of Laws
In honoring Ronald James Baker, we salute our new sister institution, the University of Prince Edward Island, and pay tribute to its young, articulate and energetic first president. A Cockney by birth, a Canadian by adoption, Ronald Baker trained as a navigator in the Royal Air Force at Portage la Prarie during World War II, and was so impressed with Canada that he decided to make it his home. After a brilliant BA and MA in English at the University of British Columbia, Professor Baker did graduate work in linguistics in London, was a member of the English Department of his alma mater from 1951 to 1963, and then became director of academic planning and first head of the department of English at Simon Fraser. In 1969 he took up his present post as president of UPEI. Navigator, linguist, academic planner and skilled administrator, Ronald Baker is indeed worthy of an honorary doctorate of laws.
