CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1972
HENRY EDMISON DUCKWORTH
to be Doctor of Science
A graduate of the University of Manitoba with both the BA and BSc degrees, Dr. Duckworth went on to the University of Chicago for doctoral studies in Physics in the exciting and highly specialized field of mass spectrometry under Arthur Dempster. His research contributions to this field have been both numerous and notable and have even included the discovery of the rare stable isotope of platinum.
A distinguished research scientist and teachers, honoured by The Canadian Association of Physicists and the American Physical Society, the Royal Society of Canada and four Canadian universities, Dr. Duckworth has turned his attention increasingly in the past decade to the complex and exciting -- perhaps at times too exciting -- field of University administration. He has been Dean of Graduate Studies at McMaster University, Vice-President (Development) and Vice-President (Academic) of the University of Manitoba, and since 1971 President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg. Somehow one feels that his work in predicting the energies released in various nuclear transmutations serves him in good stead in probing and attempting to order the academic energies that have been released in recent years and which promise in their positive and constructive thrust to transform so greatly the Canadian university scene.
Successor to United College, in turn the successor to Manitoba College and Wesley College, the University of Winnipeg was established in 1967 as a new partnership between church and state in a province where there has been a long and proud tradition of close, fruitful cooperation between the two in the field of higher education. Much can be expected from its distinguished President who brings immense learning and dedication to the leadership of this new yet old institution.
We honour Dr. Duckworth and our sister institution today and wish them both well as they pursue in renewed form their quest "to raise the standards of higher education and to equalize opportunities for the enjoyment of its benefits."
Praeses admittit Henricum Edmison Duckworth honoris causa ad gradum Doctoris in Scientia.
