GEORGE EVERETT NORRIS CHALMERS
to be Doctor of Science
One of the most beloved figures in Fredericton and in this Province of New Brunswick, Everett Chalmers has devoted his life to serving people. Throughout a long and brilliant twin career in medicine and public service he has given unsparingly of his energies and expertise, of his head and his heart.
An illustrious graduate in Arts of this University, he went on to medical studies at McGill and post-graduate studies at Saint John General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Though a son of Bathurst, he returned to Fredericton in 1936 to begin a flourishing medical practice which continues today and to take up cudgels in the long fight to provide first-rate medical facilities and services in Fredericton. A man of strong convictions and feelings, frequently firmly conveyed, Dr. Chalmers has quite literally made things happen. And when they didn't happen fast enough he was not afraid to take his quiet urgings in the medical society and thunder them forth in the legislative chamber as an elected member.
The results of his labours are everywhere visible. His devoted patients continue to grow in number, his grateful constituents press for more of his time on a wide range of matters and in his honour a magnificent new hospital rises on the hill, named appropriately the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.
His alma mater wishes to add her tribute to this great surgeon and this remarkable community legend.
