CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1975
STANLEY BERNARD CASSIDY
to be Doctor of Laws

In you, Sir, the University of New Brunswick honours a native son, an alumnus, a former member of her governing body, a successful man of affairs, a generous benefactor, and, above all, a friend of long standing.

Born at Clover Hill in Kings County, in one of the most gracious areas of rural New Brunswick, Stanley Cassidy reflects the easy good humour, gracious attitudes and quiet charm which seem to be the birthright of those born far from the madding crowd. The boy has left the country, but the country has not deserted the man.

After graduation from the Sussex High School, he enrolled at the University of New Brunswick and, by 1939, had completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Engineering and Communications and had begun a love affair with his alma mater which has lasted for more than forty years and has led to membership on the Alumni Council, the Presidency of the Alumni Association and a seat on the University's Board of Governors.

Interwoven with his affiliation with this institution is the life of a very successful business man, first as Chief Engineer of Radio Station CFNB and later as a most competent electrical contractor; it is no surprise to those who know Stanley Cassidy well that his professional life has led him to senior posts in the Association of Professional Engineers for the Province of New Brunswick, the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Board of Provincial Artisans.

Outstanding though his association with his alma mater and with his profession have been, we must pause to recognize fully his magnificent contribution as a benefactor and a philanthropist. Organizations such as our own Bio-Engineering Institute, the New Brunswick Hospital Association, the New Brunswick Museum, the Salvation Army and the New Brunswick Board of the Canadian Paraplegic Association have benefited by his skill, devotion and dedication. Most of all, must we recognize his association with the Forest Hill Rehabilitation Centre which he developed originally and with which he is still associated closely.

In honouring Stanley Cassidy, the University of New Brunswick pays tribute to a distinguished New Brunswicker, a loyal alumnus, a valuable member of the business community and a warm hearted benefactor and seeks, in small measure, to acknowledge an extensive debt.

Praeses admittit Stanleium Bernardum Cassidy honoris causa ad gradum Doctoris in Utroque Jure.
