1978 Saint John Spring Convocation
Oland, Philip Warburton
Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.)

CONVOCATION, MAY, 1978
PHILIP WARBURTON OLAND
be Doctor of Letters
Educated at Saint John High School, the University of New Brunswick, the University of Birmingham and the Techniche Hochschule in Kopenhagen, Philip Oland is a man of New Brunswick. He has devoted his life to public service without ever seeking public office.
Among the many honours already bestowed upon Philip Oland are the Order of Canada, the Coronation Medal, the Centennial Medal and the Silver Jubilee Medal. He has received honorary degrees from the Universities of Mount Allison, St. Francis Xavier and St. Thomas -- I am sure I have missed some.
In Saint John Philip Oland is well known for his many public offices, including President of the Saint John Port Development Commission, Chairman of the Atlantic Development Council and many, many others. Indeed Saint John owes its modern container cargo facility, in large measure, to the efforts of Philip Oland. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the University of New Brunswick for eighteen years and is a prominent patron of the arts, sponsor of sports and athletics, and a generous philanthropist. Two of his recent activities have been the founding, under his leadership, of the Saint John Foundation and the establishment of the Rothesay branch of the Heritage Trust.
Of Philip Oland it is very true to say, "If you want a job well done -- give it to a busy man."
To the man on the street -- or more accurately, the man in the tavern -- it is as a successful industrial biochemist that Philip Oland is revered. The products of his industrial biochemical plant in Saint John have, I am sure, been enjoyed, at one time or another, by many of us.
As he has been a great friend of this campus since its inception, it is indeed fitting that this campus present Philip Warburton Oland, man for all men, for the award of this degree.
Insignissime Praeses, tota Universitas, praesento vobis Philippum Warburton Oland ut admittatur honoris causa ad gradem Doctoris in Litteris in hac Universitate.
