CONVOCATION, MAY, 1978
WILLIAM LIVINGSTONE FORD
to be Doctor of Science

William Livingstone Ford was born in Montreal. He received his B.A. from the University of British Columbia and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He has worked as a research chemist for DuPont, as an oceanographer at Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts, at the Naval Research Centre in Nova Scotia, as Director of Scientific Services for the Department of National Defense in Ottawa, as Superintendent of the Pacific Naval Laboratories in British Columbia, as Scientific Advisor to the Chief of Naval Staff, and as Chief of Personnel of the Defence Research Board. Since 1965 Dr. Ford has been Director of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Dr. Ford is a research chemist and oceanographer of very great distinction and a scientific administrator of equal distinction.

Dr. Ford has spent all his life since he left Quebec close to the ocean and it is no accident that his continuing hobby is sailing.

As a friend of this campus, Dr. Ford has given immense support and cooperation in the field of marine research and in encouraging the establishment on this campus of the undergraduate program in Marine Biology.

In conclusion, Mr. President, I believe that it is singularly appropriate that a Livingstone be presented to by a Stanley!

Insignissime Praeses, tota Universitas, praesento vobis Guilielmum Livingstone Ford ut admittatur honoris causa ad gradem Doctoris in Scientia in hac Universitate.
