STUART TRUEMAN
to be Doctor of Letters
A native of Saint John, Stuart Trueman has spent his working life with the Saint John newspaper starting as a cub reporter and cartoonist and for twenty years as editor. He remains, since retirement, a regular contributor.
A writer of numerous articles in Canadian and American magazines, he published his first book in 1955. Since that time seven other books have appeared in print.
Writing about New Brunswick history and folklore, about animals he has known, his irrepressible sense of humour sparkles from every page. His humourous fiction has received critical acclaim and in 1969 he received the Stephen Leacock Award for humour -- the highest honour Canada bestows on its distinguished humourists.
Like most dedicated editors Stuart Trueman has conducted a lifelong battle with reporters for the correct use of words.
It has been suggested that Stuart Trueman inherited his sense of the ridiculous from his mother, an inspired eccentric whose zest for life included, at the age of over eighty, a hope that her plane would be hijacked so that she could visit Cuba.
Whatever its source Stuart Trueman's wit and warmth have brought pleasure to his vast following of admiring readers, in New Brunswick and throughout Canada.
It is fitting that this native of Saint John and long-time resident, author, humourist, and humanist should be honoured by the Saint John Campus of the University of New Brunswick.
