CONVOCATION, MAY, 1979
WILLIAM STANLEY HAYES CRAWFORD
to be Doctor of Science

William Stanley Hayes Crawford is a native of Saint John, graduating from Saint John High School as valedictorian. He received a double honours degree from Mount Allison University, and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

During his career Dr. Crawford has held many academic and administrative posts including Professor of Mathematics, Head of the Mathematics Department, Dean of Arts and Science, Vice-President and President of Mount Allison University.

It is not unusual, in Canada at least, for a mathematician to become a university president. Mathematics was defined by Bertrand Russell as "The subject in which we never know what we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true". While Saint Augustine remarked, "The Good Christian should beware of mathematicians .... Mathematicians have made a covenant with the Devil".

It is interesting to speculate whether or not ignorance of that whereof they speak, a cavalier disregard for the verities combined with an alliance with the Devil, uniquely endow mathematicians with those very qualities necessary for the successful discharge of the office of President of a Canadian university.

Be that as it may, Dr. Crawford has brought to the office the flair, the patience, the tact, the wisdom and the wit, necessary. He joins the rank of distinguished presidents of Mount Allison University.

Dr. Crawford has, not surprisingly, received many honours and distinctions both academic and professional.

As an athlete Dr. Crawford is a former Maritime golf champion, a university basketball player, and coach. As a responsible citizen Dr. Crawford has served on innumerable committees, local, provincial and national, and international.

It is only fitting that the university campus in his native city should choose to honour Dr. Crawford, distinguished scholar, brilliant teacher, skillful administrator, famous athlete, by the award of this degree.

Insignissime Praeses, tota Universitas, praesento vobis Guilielmum Stanleium Hayes Crawford ut admittatur honoris causa ad gradum Doctoris in Scientia in hac Universitate.
