CONVOCATION, MAY, 1981
MARGOT RUTH ROACH
to be Doctor of Science

Born in Moncton, Dr. Margot Roach came as an undergraduate to the University of New Brunswick in 1951. Some students are unsure of their lifetime goals at this stage of their lives; some have already decided to prepare themselves as teachers, scientists or doctors. Dr. Roach was remarkable in that she knew then that she wanted a dual career as a doctor-scientist and was prepared to undertake the long and rigorous studies which would give her highly specialized training in both fields.

Her first step was a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in Mathematics and Physics from the University of New Brunswick, earned in 1955 with scholarships as the most promising science student of her class in the university and the country.

ln the same year she moved to McGill University from which she received a degree in Medicine, cum laude, in 1959.

With her scientific and medical bases securely established, Dr. Roach proceeded to specialize in both areas, earning a PhD in Biophysics from the University of Western Ontario in 1962 and becoming a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 1969.

Dr. Roach has applied her dual training to the study of the basic structure and function of blood vessels in all parts of the body. Because malfunctioning of blood vessels contributes to so many different diseases, including brain damage, heart attacks and strokes, her extensive research has contributed largely to advances being made in understanding and solving many physical problems.

Now Professor, at the University of Western Ontario, of both Biophysics and Medicine, she is recognized as a physician-scientist of international stature.

Insignissime Praeses, tota Universitas, praesento vobis Margot Ruth Roach ut admittatur honoris causa ad gradum Doctoris Scientia in hac Universitate.
