CONVOCATION, MAY, 1985
JAMES ALEXANDER MACMURRAY
to be Doctor of Laws
In August of 1985 the City of Saint John, in its bicentennial year, will host the largest single event in its history, the Jeux Canada Games ’85. The legacy to the community, in terms of equipment and facilities, will be immense and this campus will share in this legacy through the acquisition of the magnificent 3 million-dollar stadium, now nearing completion. Much of the credit for non-governmental fund-raising for the Summer Games must go to Saint John businessman James MacMurray, whom we honour here today.
James MacMurray was born and raised in this city and attended Mount Allison University for one year before war service called him into the Air Force. He joined Eastern Securities Company Limited in 1945, became President in 1950 and held this position until 1968, when the company was amalgamated with Richardson Securities of Canada. Since then he has built up his business interests to the point where he is currently chairman and director, or on the executive of, Fundy Cablevision Limited, Brunswick Square Limited, Fredericton Cablevision Limited, Brunswick Mining and Smelting and NBTel, to name but a few. He is also active locally, regionally and nationally in the YMCA and has served the Saint John United Way, the Fundy Region Development Commission and the Board of Regents of Mount Allison University.
It is to the Jeux Canada Games ’85 that we should return, however, for James MacMurray has devoted considerable time and energy in the last year to ensuring that the Games will be the most successful yet. As Vice-President and Chairman of its Board, he has played a major role in orchestrating the Friends of the Games Fund-Raising Campaign which has now raised over 70% of its target of 2.5 million dollars.
It is typical of the unassuming nature of the man that he prefers to remain behind-the-scenes in much of his community endeavours. Today we bring him on-stage, protesting a little perhaps, to reveal a man of great dedication in all that he does. The university salutes a fine citizen of Saint John, New Brunswick and Canada in conferring on James MacMurray the degree of Doctor of Laws.
Insignissime Praeses, tota Universitas, praesento vobis Jacobum Alexandrum MacMurray ut admittatur honoris causa ad gradem Doctoris in Utroque Jure in hac Universitate.
