ENCAENIA, MAY, 1949
ARTHUR FENWICK VANWART
to be Doctor of Laws

There stands before you one for whom introduction is superfluous -- either to you, his peers on the dais, or to this wider assembly here gathered to witness him honoured -- Arthur Fenwick VanWart.

The University as a body is rewarding his years of devoted and responsible work in a hundred capacities; but chiefest as representative on the Senate of the Associated Alumni, as Past-President of the Alumni Society, and as Chairman of the War Memorial Committee.

His fellow physicians will feel that his great public services to the medical profession are today receiving their meed at the hands of his Alma Mater.

But we, the humbler lay public, rejoice to salute that familiar figure whose incisive features and spare frame we have watched for close on three decades haunting the corridors of University and Hospital alike or -- homelier vision -- stooped in prompt and kindly aid over some casualty of the football field.

Seldom has the University honoured one of her sons who has given for her constant well-being more of his time, his talents and his sympathy; or one who will, by the countless numbers who have known and worked with him, be more popularly acclaimed.
