SESQUICENTENNIAL ENCAENIA, 18 MAY 1950
DAVID LINDSAY KEIR
to be Doctor of Laws
Knight, soldier, historian; formerly President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, until last year elected Master of Balliol College, Oxford.
To us Sir David is triply dear. Firstly, that he will deliver the Speech of Honour this afternoon; secondly, that, being by birth a Scot -- a nation noted for its persistent invasions of the American continent -- he carried off in one of his border forays a Canadian bride; and thirdly, that his gracious Lady herself has been brought by him to be our guest (and what guest could be more welcome?) at these our Anniversary celebrations.
