J0HN WILLIAM BERNARD SISAM
to be Doctor of Science
It is our good custom to single out for Honorary Degrees some of our worthiest graduates and to have regard not only for brilliance but for solid and enduring labours. Two such I ask you to honour today.
John William Bernard Sisam graduated as Bachelor of Science in Forestry from this University in 1931. He was listed in the 1st class, having proved an excellent student, endowed with a retentive memory and a most engaging personality. Yale University made him Master of Forestry, magna cum laude, in 1937.
He had pursued research in Silviculture for several years for the Dominion Government when he was appointed Director of the Imperial Forestry Bureau at Oxford in England, 1939-1945, a key position in the long-term economy of the United Kingdom. Returning to Canada he joined the Faculty of Forestry in the University of Toronto, of
which he has been Dean for the past nine years.
He had developed into a strong organizer of scientific research in his field, and, having headed several important consultative boards in Ontario, he was elected President of the Canadian Institute of Forestry.
It is the twenty-fifth year since he left his Alma Mater. His fellow Associated Alumni having chosen him to address their annual meeting, we do well to crown their choice by this symbol of the University's recognition of work ably done and yet to do.
