DOUGLAS BLACK WELDON
to be Doctor of Laws
Born in Moncton, Douglas Weldon had returned with the Military Cross from World War I before the other facets
of a dynamic personality had shown their glint. Settling with aplomb into marriage and business, he had soon left
two established firms to found his own. At this, the critical stage in a self-made career, he never lost the wider
interests, the youthful enthusiasm, and the deep-seated ideal of service that have benefited students innumerable,
even as his business acumen has enriched the institutions he himself was not destined to attend.
Golfer, fisherman, and raiser of Aberdeen Angus, his proudest of many directorates is probably that of the Royal
Winter Fair. Valued, respected, and continuing Chairman of Western, our sister, he personifies perfectly the
dedication to Canadian universities of busy men of affairs and their understanding of our dilemma.
Very recently he has been appointed Chairman of the Canada Council. We, who have received our meed from that
golden source, do well to honour one whose financial skills could find no more precious employment, and whose
goodwill to higher learning has so long been manifest.
