CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1965
ADRIEN JOSEPH CORMIER
to be Doctor of Civil Law

In December of last year Adrien Cormier became Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench Division of the Supreme Court of New Brunswick.

To the Province the appointment brought satisfaction as the reward for his judgeship of the County Court of Kent and Westmorland, to this University because he was a graduate of our Faculty of Law.

The face of Cormier that the public saw was that of a judge, learned, scrupulous and humane. Only to individuals was ever revealed the face of the sincere and practising Christian, who would never let his left hand know what his right was doing, and whose heart and door stood open to the distressed of any colour, creed, status, or reeding. For each and every appeal his concern was readily aroused and on occasion went so deep as to endanger his health.

Shunning publicity as he shuns air-travel and thunderstorms, he indulges but one vanity, and that is his expertise with the lobster. Under his roof none else is able, or indeed permitted, to prepare this delicacy, none even to serve it, but he; and his chef's apron, to adapt a threadbare phrase, remains an impenetrable Linen Curtain between host and guest. Chez Cormier, he only serves who also stands and cooks.

Mr. President and Members of this University Body, I commend to you in Adrien Cormier not merely a star in our legal firmament, but a Canadian soldier and diplomat, a revered representative of Acadia, and a most lovable, if self-effacing, human being.
