CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1969
THOMAS BLACKBURN
to be Doctor of Laws

For more than forty years an associate of the late Lord Beaverbrook having been General Manager in turn of the Daily Express, the Sunday Express and the Evening Standard, he rose to the position of Chairman of the Group in 1955. He found time from his many duties as an officer in various press organizations to engage in good works.

His humanitarian concern is exemplified in many ways not least in his acceptance of the Treasurership of the Institute of Child Health and of the Presidency of the Newsvendor's Benevolent Institution. He saw service in the Scottish regiments in the First World War and afterwards studied economics at the University College, Nottingham.

A man of many parts, a life-long friend and admirer of Lord Beaverbrook, he became a Knight Bachelor in 1968 in recognition of his many distinguished services to the Nation.
