ENCAENIA, MAY, 1974
CHARLES ARTHUR WHITTEN
to be Doctor of Science

Save for a few members of the Fredericton Branch of the Flat Earth Society who may be present, you and I know that the earth is round and fairly large; secure in that knowledge we rest content at night and get on with other things. Fortunately in this as in other areas there are specialists to correct such common sense -- and often commonplace -- judgments. Charles Whitten, retired Chief Geodesist of the United States is a preeminent specialist who has devoted a lifetime to the science of geodesy -- the study of the exact size and shape of the earth.

Of necessity an internationalist, Dr. Whitten has done much to draw together the work of geodesists throughout the world. He has been President of the International Association of Geodesy, a member of the executive of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, and General Secretary of the American Geophysical Union.

UNB has long been interested in this important field, and takes pleasure in recognizing Dr. Whitten's many contributions to geodesy in Canada. We take pleasure as well in hosting the International Symposium on the Redefinition of North American Geodetic Networks later this month in which the work and dreams of Dr. Whitten will figure prominently

Praeses admittit Carolum Arthurum Whitten honoris causa ad gradum Doctoris in Scientia.
