CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1974
CHESTER LAWRENCE MAHAN
to be Doctor of Laws

Leaving the Gaspe coast of Quebec and the arcane world of banking to join the equally arcane groves of academe, Chester Mahan joined the University of New Brunswick in 1951 as Bursar. To his great benefit and ours, we have learned from each other –- that the world of banks and the world of universities are strange and wonderful places, seemingly impenetrable from the outside but exciting and very human from the inside.

He has had a long and distinguished career as one of our principal administrative officers. Skillful manager of our investment portfolio, Secretary to the University Senate, now the Board of Governors, Comptroller of our finances and sometimes our lives, he has been zealous in the execution of his duties yet always warm and friendly in his personal encounters and eminently approachable.

In the performance of his trust he was always sure that the University existed to further teaching, learning, and scholarship and that enhancing the quality of UNB must represent the first claim on our resources however large or meager. He has seen the University grow to a formidable size and his wise counsel and energies played an important role in our development. We take pleasure in bestowing upon him today this high honour.

Praeses admittit Chester Laurentium Mahan honoris causa ad gradum Doctoris in Utroque Jure.
