Professor Edwin Stuart is from New Brunswick, the oldest son of a family of distinguished teachers. His father was a teacher, and our own "Excellence in Teaching Awards" pay tribute to the skill and dedication of Allan Stuart, the youngest brother of the teacher and physician whom we honour today.

From The Brunswickan of 1928 I have learned that "Ned" successfully debated the topic of "Canada and Free Trade," made a riotous trip to Mt. Allison on a special train, served on the paper as Editor of College Affairs, and played a somewhat unclear role in a primitive and obscure ritual known as "the Burning of Anna."

From a curriculum vitae of many pages I have also learned that Doctor Stuart, after teaching for some years in the schools of this province, took his B.A. and M.A. from this University. In 1933 he graduated from McGill as a Medical Doctor, and since that time has served his country as an outstanding teacher, a gallant soldier, an experimental surgeon, and as a practising Otolaryngologist of international repute. A decade ago he was honoured with the Award of Merit from the American Academy of Ophthamology and Otolaryngology for his "services to the Academy in its educational program."

Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, he taught for over thirty years in the Faculty of Medicine of his second alma mater, carried on a large public and private practise, and pursued with enthusiasm the mysteries of the labyrinths of the inner ear. This gentle man "hath the state, some service done," and we are proud to welcome him back after half a century to his native province as an honoured doctor of our University.
