CONVOCATION, MAY, 1981
BENJAMIN REX GUSS
to be Doctor of Civil Law
It is appropriate that the Saint John campus of the University of New Brunswick confer upon Benjamin Rex Guss the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, not only because of his distinguished contribution to the legal profession in this province and this country since his admission to the bar in 1931 but also in recognition of his service to this city.
The list of Judge Guss’ professional accomplishments at the municipal, provincial and national levels is formidable: president of the Saint John Law Society and of the New Brunswick Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, Judge of the Provincial Court and the first person appointed a Judge of the Family Court in this province, national chairman of the Municipal Law Sector of the Canadian Bar Association. However, he will be remembered most appreciatively by those outside as well as those within his profession for the many years he spent working to establish the legal aid programs now developed in New Brunswick and across Canada.
The degree of Doctor of Civil Law is appropriate to Judge Guss also in that the primary meaning of the adjective "civil" is "of the community". Judge Guss has been an active leader in almost every aspect of public life in Saint John. He has given his time to business, as a long-time member of the Saint John Board of Trade; to medicine, as honorary legal counsel to the Saint John Red Cross Association and member of the Provincial Directorate of the Saint John Tuberculosis Association; to the arts, as a founding member and president of the Saint John Symphony Orchestra and the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music; and to education, as a president of the Saint John College Development Committee which was instrumental in the development of the campus which honors him today.
Insignissime Praeses, tota Universitas, praesento vobis Benjamin R. Guss ut admittatur honoris causa ad gradum Doctoris in Jure Civili in hac Universitate.
