CONVOCATION, OCTOBER, 1982
GEORGE EDWIN GRAHAM
to be Doctor of Science
On the official opening of the Saint John Regional Hospital in Tucker Park this campus of the University of New Brunswick takes pleasure in recognizing both this vast new medical facility and the gentleman most responsible for its successful completion.
George Edwin Graham had a long record of public service in this province before he accepted the demanding position as Chairman of the Hospital Planning Committee in 1971. He has served as President of the Saint John Board of Trade and the Atlantic Provinces Chamber of Commerce, as Chairman of the Electoral Boundaries Commission which drew up the province’s single-member ridings and as Division Chairman of the United Way Campaign, as a member of the New Brunswick Development Institute and the Provincial Industrial Relations Committee.
A 1946 graduate of this University in Electrical Engineering, Mr. Graham has also been gainfully employed since his graduation with NBTel, Serving both as Vice President Operations and Vice President Planning. His organizational abilities have been recognized in the business community by his appointment as a director of Ganong and of New Brunswick Coal Limited.
Bringing the new regional hospital into existence, after a decade of dedicated effort, is, then, only the most recent of Mr. Graham’s multifarious activities. All of which illustrate his ability to cooperate effectively with others in disparate fields for the enrichment of the city and province in which he lives.
Although the honorary degree of Doctor of Science now to be conferred by his alma mater will not permit Mr. Graham to practice medicine in this province, it will at least give him titular equality with members of that profession whose respect he has already earned.
