Lloyd Sutherland to be Doctor of Science

Lloyd Sutherland was twenty years old when he graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Today, he is a medical doctor, surgeon, specialist in gastroenterology and internal medicine, professor in a leading medical school, and one of Canada’s leading researchers in his field. He is one of our most accomplished alumni, to say nothing of his personal courage and adversity, and the strength of his determination to live life to the fullest.

He gathered his academic and professional credentials at UNB, McGill, Toronto, and the University of Calgary. In 1978, he joined the active staff of Calgary General Hospital and began lecturing in Medicine at the University of Calgary. Within a year, he was Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and in 1981 became an active member of the staff of Foothills Hospital, where he continued to teach and participate in the Intestinal Disease Research Unit. It was here that he honed his expertise in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and began to emerge as one of the country’s top researchers in the field. In 1986, the Faculty of Medicine at Calgary gave him a full appointment as an associate professor and made him program director of the Gastroenterology Residency Training Program. As he climbed the ranks to full professor and head of his division, he found himself surrounded by postgraduate research and clinical fellows; invited to address conferences and medical symposiums across Canada and around the world; and deluged with requests for his assistance from granting agencies, editorial boards, professional organizations, and research foundations.

Lloyd Sutherland’s resume is staggering in size. Its forty-two single-spaced pages summarize a fascinating career spent in the science of the human body. He has delivered almost 150 invited addresses, published or co-published 130 peer reviewed papers, and presented 120 abstracts at scholarly conferences around the world. His numerous research projects have been supported by over four million dollars in grants from provincial and federal government agencies, the Medical Research Council, and private foundations. While his focus has sometimes been wide, ranging from the study of colon cancer to developmentally disabled children, the majority of his work as been on diseases of the bowel: ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease, the impact of AIDS and HIV on the gastrointestinal tract, and the therapeutic treatment of all of these. What they add up to is recognition and acceptance by all of the leading journals in his field, and a place on the reading list of students of inflammatory bowel diseases wherever medicine is taught. Whether in the United Kingdome, the United States, Europe, or Canada, his name is recognized among the leading authorities on his subject.

As one might expect, Dr. Sutherland has been much honored during his academic and professional career. He won scholarships and prizes as an undergraduate here at UNB, and continued to gain recognition for his outstanding work at every level. In 1994, he was invited to Green College, Oxford, as a visiting scholar, and in 1999 returned to Oxford as the Sidney Truelove Lecturer. He was a finalist for outstanding leadership in the Alberta Science Awards for three years running. Last year, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada awarded him its prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The recognition of leading researchers and universities around the world is proof positive that a UNB graduate can aim as high as he or she wants, and can achieve with the best anywhere. That Lloyd Sutherland has selflessly spent his life in service to others, dedicated to alleviating human suffering, simply adds to our admiration and respect. It is our great honour today to welcome him back after all of these years, and to recognize his outstanding achievement in the world of medicine.
