SANDRA L. IRVING
to be Doctor of Letters
Sandra Irving received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Distinction from the University of New Brunswick and a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Toronto. Her research focus is educational policy and the politics of identity.
Sandra Irving serves as Chair of the President's Advisory Council for RSC: The Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada and is also Co-Chair of the RSC Extending Excellence Fund Raising Campaign. In 2004 she was appointed to serve as a Canadian member of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission. As well, she is a member of the University of Toronto President's International Alumni Council and the President's Leadership Council at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.
A strong proponent of creating opportunities for University of New Brunswick students, she established the Sandra Irving Scholarship in 1995, a $5,000 scholarship for University of New Brunswick Saint john Political Science students and the Primrose Scholarship, a $5,000 entrance scholarship. At Dartmouth College where their daughter is a Senior, Sandra and her husband recently established the Sandra and Arthur Irving Family Scholarship Fund for Canadian Students and the Fund for Dartmouth Undergraduate Business Initiative in the Tuck School of Business. Sandra also created the Acadia University and Victoria College at the University of Toronto Student Exchange Program.
Together with her husband Arthur, Sandra was actively involved in the planning and development of the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and the Harriett Irving Botanical Gardens for Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, a gift from the Irving family.
Over the years Sandra has supported many non-profit, public service organizations. She served as Chairperson of the New Brunswick Junior Achiever's Business Hall of Fame in 2001 and 2002 and continues to serve as a board member. In the recent past she was a member of the Board of the New Brunswick Region 2 Health Authority, serving as Vice Chair, University of New Brunswick, the McGill Institute for Canadian Studies, the Theatre New Brunswick Foundation Inc., D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education), Dialogue New Brunswick and the Boys & Girls Club of Saint john. In 2009 Sandra was Honorary Chair of the 11th Annual Rocmaura Nursing Home Foundation Gala. She previously served as Chair for the Mother-Daughter Walk for Heart & Stroke.
In January 2003 Sandra was presented with the Queen's Golden jubilee Medal in recognition of her many volunteer and public service activities.
