Risk and a little luck are part of what makes a successful future, university graduates were told in Saint John yesterday.
Rudolf Marcus, a Nobel prize-winning chemist, challenged the graduates to take their own risks at the 19th graduation ceremonies of the University of New Brunswick, Saint John Campus.
"Along with the risk comes the tremendous pleasure of achieving a successful final result, be it taking a difficult course at the university, undertaking what later proves to be a challenging research problem or embarking on some new enterprise," said Marcus.
Marcus told the 215 graduates to keep an open mind to possibilities and to take risks when they arrive.
Marcus shared some of his own risk taking experiences in theoretical chemistry. Marcus decided to pursue post-doctoral studies in the field even though there were no theoreticians in chemistry in Canada at the time.
