"A rite of passage UNB graduates 498 in the first of three ceremonies – Ceremony A" Daily Gleaner (21 May 1998). (UA Case 67, Box 3)
During the ceremony, successful entrepreneur and UNB graduate W. Anderson Devereaux was awarded an honorary doctor of letters and delivered the graduation address.
The Boston resident is the founder and managing director of American Capital Co., a 10-year-old company that initiates and manages investment activities in the areas of media, telecommunication and information services.
He gave the graduates an upbeat message.
"I’m here to tell you that things are pretty good out there," Devereaux said.
He said historians will some day compare the information revolution currently under way in world with the industrial revolution of the previous century. There is great wealth creation underway in the new information economy, he said.
"With only slight variations the good times are likely to roll on for the foreseeable future," Devereaux said. "There is no obvious enemy out there. No wars, no depression, no burning social issues or very few."
