"It’s bred in your bones," said Lyse Doucet quoting Robertson Davies. "No matter where I go I will always be a New Brunswick girl."

Doucet, who was granted an honorary Doctor of Letters degree by the University of New Brunswick, Saint John, Friday was presenting a convocation colloquium on "Our Place in the World: How to be a Global Citizen and New Brunswick Nationalist," a couple of hours before she received the honour.

Talking about growing up in a small community by the Bay of Chaleur, she said "fate, circumstances and where you are born has an impact" on one’s personality. "You can’t get away from what is bred in bones," she said.

Doucet described herself as "partly Irish, partly Acadian and one hundred per cent Canadian." She said after coming into contact with other cultures "we belong to a republic of conscience."
